La Martiniere

La Martiniere, located in Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is an old colonial building built by Major General Claude Martin in 1785 for his country residence. In 1845 it was changed into a college and now has different campuses for boys and girls. La Martiniere College has become one of the leading educational facilities in India.

La Martiniere College is also seeped in history for the involvement of its teachers and students in the defense of Lucknow during the mutiny of 1857.

Whilst visiting I was told that Sir Cliff Richards attended La Martiniere College during his school years and he engraved his name on the steps leading down from the main building towards the tower. I did look for a while but couldn’t find Sir Cliff’s name, of course it would be Harry Webb at that time.

A picture of the tower of La Martiniere taken in 2003 with my Sony Cybershot digital camera. Stories tell how students would jump from the tower during times when the nearby River Gomti would flood the area.
