The Colosseum

The Colosseum is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and the ‘Must See’ when visiting Rome. Two movies have their story set in The Colosseum or have featured it as a setting for a large part of the movie’s plot. Of course initially the most famous was the 1959 movie ‘Ben Hur’ staring Charlton Heston but now arguably more famous, the year 2000 movie ‘Gladiator’ starring Russell Crowe. Both of these epic movies re-created The Colosseum as it was in the Roman days of old.

A less well known movie ‘Jumper’ from 2008 starring Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson, featured The Colosseum as it is today and for me brought back memories of my own visit 20 years ago. So before  the movies Gladiator and Jumper were even thought of, I visited The Colosseum knowing that it was a site that was on the top of my list and just had to be seen. It is one of those places that just takes your breath away and unless you force yourself to leave you will sit for hours and just stare.

The following photos were taken on my Praktika MTL3 film camera, the negatives were scanned and the images retouched in Photoshop.

The Colosseum‘s original Latin name was Amphitheatrum Flavium as seen in the above photo.
